The Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776 in Philadelphia which became the nation's capital from 1790–1800. Appropriately then, Philadelphia plays a prominent role in the Independence Day celebrations that are held throughout the United States. The iconic Liberty Bell occupies centre stage throughout proceedings, beginning with the presentation of the Liberty Medal in Independence Hall. Each year this is awarded to someone who is considered to have advanced the cause of freedom in the world. Nelson Mandela and Lech Walesa have both been recipients. Formalities continue with the assembly of descendants of the signatories of the Declaration, in a ceremony at the Liberty Bell. Then the party really kicks off with patriotic parades, parties and picnics, ending with a firework display over the Delaware River.
