Hurricane Supplication Day,

Virgin Islands, U.S.

25 Jul 2011 - 25 Jul 2011

The fourth Monday in July marks the official start of the hurricane season in the Virgin Islands, a potentially dangerous time of the year. Although storms can start as early as June, islanders take the national holiday as a day to offer prayers to ask for safe keeping during the season, which officially lasts through until the end of October. It is quite a low key affair so visitors shouldn't expect outlandish partying until dawn. Visitors can expect a warm welcome at churches around the islands and it is a great way to really get to know the local people and their way of life.
