As home to the headquarters of car manufacturer Ford, Detroit is very much a city whose identity is connected to cars. The first show, held in 1907, took place in a beer garden in Detroit where a total of 17 exhibitors showed 33 vehicles. Today the show is held at the Cobo Centre which has approximately 65,030 sq m (700,000 sq ft) of exhibit space and the show crams exhibits and attractions into every last inch of it.
