Feast of the Black Nazarene

Fri 09 Jan 2009 in Manila
In a tradition that dates back to the 17th century, the citizens of Manila congregate at the city's Quiapo Church for the religious Feast of the Black Nazarene festival. Walking barefoot as a sign of humility, men carry the life-size statue of the Black Nazarene - a representation of Christ - through the city streets and all the onlookers scramble to try and touch the figure. Those that do get close enough to touch the Black Nazarene are thought to be blessed after which it is believed miracles can happen and illnesses cured. The event is an incredible sight that attracts Christians from all over the country. The figure itself was brought from Mexico by a priest in 1606. more »
