In cider terms, Asturias in the north of Spain is the equivalent of Somerset in England in terms of its reputation for producing great cider. Great pride is taken in the production of the bubbly beverage, and an equal amount of care in its pouring - from bottle to glass a distance of one metre. The little town of Nava holds a festival in homage to cider, bolstered by a series of discussions, exhibitions and cider-related events that build towards an international championship of cider pourers, and a grand sampling event. Thousands of litres of free cider are available to those visitors who join in the spirit of the fiesta, the only condition being that they wear a green neckerchief to identify themselves as 'friend and defender' of the delectable cider.

The 33rd annual Nava Cider Festival takes place in 2009.
