Elche Moors and Christians,

Elche, Spain

01 Feb 2010 - 28 Mar 2010 Date to be confirmed

Exceptional for its magnificent forest of palm trees and its ancient and medieval remains, the town of Elche recreates a few pages from its history each year in a costume extravaganza. The Moors and Christians Festival in Elche consists of exhibitions, feasts and processions, and lasts a full week. A dedicated association is responsible for the preparations, with representatives from the nine divisions of the historic re-enactments. These include both Moorish and Christian cohorts, mounted troops and infantry. Costumes are carefully prepared and each group takes pride in the splendour of their appearance. Historical accuracy takes a back seat in this re-run of the enmity between foes, but the result is quite a spectacle.
