These classical music concerts take place in the capital cities of Gran Canaria, Tenerife and, with a reduced programme, on each of the smaller islands of The Canaries archipelago. The first edition took place in 1985, and the festival has since grown in stature, with three main aims: firstly, to enrich the cultural agenda of the region; secondly, to give an international status to the Canary Islands; and thirdly, to diversify tourism into cultural and classical directions. Concert performances are of the highest order and in past years have featured names of the stature of Claudio Abbado, Riccardo Muti, Carlo Maria Giulini, Daniel Barenboim, Sir Colin Davis, John Eliot Gardiner, Frans Bruggen, Andre Previn, Riccardo Chailly, Bernard Haitink and Ivan Fischer.
