The Wexford Festival Opera has rightfully earned itself a reputation as one of the finest events of its kind and attracts thousands of visitors from all corners of the globe. With both daytime and evening performances, Wexford is abuzz with creativity and energy during the 18-day run of the festival and the whole town takes part with shops and restaurants lavishly decorated for the popular event. Thousands of spectators gather every year to watch the spectacular fireworks display that lights up the night sky and marks the official opening of the festival. With a long history stretching back more than 50 years, the Wexford Festival Opera is a glittering event that attracts some of the best performers from around the world. Out of this event sprang the Wexford Festival Fringe (see separate entry), which runs an eclectic programme of alternative events making Wexford a great place to be during this period.
