Lover's Day (La Diada de Sant Jordi),

Barcelona, Spain

23 Apr 2010

Spring is most definitely in the air on the most romantic day in the Catalunyan calendar. Sant Jordi (St George) is patron saint of the region and is strongly associated with the notion of chivalry. Here, he is the equivalent of Valentine and he presides over a day of romance and the exchange of gifts between sweethearts. Traditionally, girls are given roses while the boys get a book. In the main shopping streets, flower and book stalls spring up, and almost half a million books leave the shelves. Many people take a day off work and there are music and dancing events as well as book readings and signings in various parts of the city centre.
