Australia was formally colonised when the British First Fleet arrived at Sydney Cove on 26 January 1788. In 1818 there was an official 30th anniversary party to mark the occasion. Although Australia Day is now a nationwide public holiday in all states, Sydney remains the focal point for the official celebrations. In recognition of the country's Aboriginal roots and its modern-day cultural diversity, the more formal celebrations like the military parades and the re-enactment of the First Fleet landing are now replaced by more inclusive events. Visitors can expect a packed programme of cultural activities including free access to the city's museums, galas, parades, concerts and street theatre. As ever, the day is rounded off with a huge fireworks display.
