Twelfth July Celebrations,

Northern Ireland, United Kingdom

12 Jul 2010

During the annual Twelfth July Celebrations, members of a Protestant fraternity known as the Orange Order march through the streets of various towns and cities in Ireland with the main march taking place in Belfast. 12 July marks the day in 1690 that the Protestant Prince William of Orange beat the Catholic King James II in the famous Battle of the Boyne. It is essentially a religious event but has strong political undertones that reflect the religious divide in Northern Ireland. Wearing traditional orange sashes and carrying orange flags and banners representing the fraternity, this is a politically charged event where emotions can sometimes run high.
