A 42.2km (26.2 mile) road race for all-comers, this has been a fixture in the popular sporting calendar since 1981. The event starts with the Men's Elite race in which the world's leading long-distance runners participate. It often includes many Olympic and World champions as well as world record holders. around 30,000 lesser athletes follow in their wake, watched by 100,000 spectators. Runners must apply in advance and stick to a training schedule before being accepted. Many fun runners take part in costume, and most of the amateurs are in it to raise money for charity. The course passes many London landmarks including Tower Bridge and Big Ben, making it a photogenic as well as an exhausting occasion.
