01 May 2010

The famous Cavalcade of Sassari, Sardinia's second city, was originally a grand show laid on for visiting royalty. These days it is one of the biggest and most high profile events in Sardinia, and the highlight of a month of cultural events. The Cavalcata is divided into three distinct parts. There is a parade through the streets of the centre of town on horseback, followed by a costume procession in which each participant wears the elaborate native dress of their village. Finally, the Cavalcata adjourns to a race track on the edge of town for equestrian races and stunts. Many of the professional riders who participate in the Sienna and Asti Palio come from Sardinia, so keen competition and high risk strategies are guaranteed.
