Once capital of the Western Roman Empire, the city of Ravenna hosts a summer festival of classical music each year in its many impressive theatres and churches. The Byzantine basilicas, cloisters and piazzas provide superb backdrops that combine art and architecture with music in memorable performances. Founded by Riccardo Muti in 1990, the Ravenna Festival has become one of the most prestigious musical events in Italy. It attracts some of the finest artists, orchestras and opera companies in the world.
