Corpus Christi Procession,

Orvieto, Italy

01 May 2010 - 30 May 2010 Date to be confirmed

Perched on an outcrop of rock, the ancient city of Orvieto provides an atmospheric setting for the medieval and religious spectacular of Corpus Christi. Orvieto's version of this event recalls the 1263 Christian miracle of Bolsena in which, while a priest was giving mass, blood issued from the host. The linen altar cloth on which the drops fell is kept in the Cathedral and is carried through the streets of Orvieto for the feast of Corpus Christi. The procession is supported by a sumptuously-clad cast of 400 people celebrating the time when Orvieto was a papal see with 33 popes in residence. Knights, ladies, musicians and flagsmen, each of whom is dressed in 14th-century costume, proceed through the streets the evening before Corpus Christi.
