La Sartiglia,

Oristano, Italy

Details to be confirmed

01 Feb 2010 - 28 Feb 2010 Date to be confirmed

This historic horse riding spectacle in the pre-sanded streets is the biggest event of the year in provincial Oristano, and one of the biggest of its type in Italy. Three days of costumed merriment revolve around the feats on horseback performed by representatives of Oristano's guilds. Masks, ribbons and hats top-out the medieval gear worn by the riders who charge at a small star-shaped ring suspended high above the ground. The aim is to pierce the centre of the star with a rapier, each time accompanied by great fanfares and rolling of drums. In the afternoon, hair-raising stunts are performed on horseback. Day two is given over to younger riders on smaller horses and the main event is repeated on day three. At night there is singing and dancing in traditional style on the squares of the town.
