Corpus Christi and the dancing egg (l'ou com balla),

Barcelona, Spain

01 Jun 2010 - 30 Jun 2010 Date to be confirmed

This is a Christian festival honoured throughout the country with street parties and processions, but the celebrations in Barcelona are made particularly interesting by l'ou com balla (the dancing egg). A local tradition dating from the 16th century, a hollowed-out egg 'dances' on the spout of many of the city's water fountains, which are decorated with flowers for the event. The white eggshell symbolises the body of Christ and, with the flowing water, is a symbol of renewal. If the egg does not break, it is said to mean good luck for the year ahead .
