Aguman Sanduk,

Minalin, Philippines

01 Jan 2011

Celebrated on the afternoon of New Year's Day as a gentle wind down after the exuberance of the previous night, this event sees Minalin men don ladies clothes and parade through the streets during the annual Aguman Sanduk. Normally renowned for their traditional, macho attitudes, Manila's men shed their inhibitions to the delight of the many mothers, wives, sisters and girlfriends in the crowds who cheer on this fun spectacle. The tradition dates back to 1934 when some of the town's men folk, fortified by alcohol, decided to start the practice as a way of bringing a suitably memorable end to the New Year celebrations. It quickly became a popular social event and now many of Manila's most important people take part in the procession with priests, politicians and the odd mayor joining the fun.
