Juneteenth Celebration,

Minneapolis, United States

01 Jun 2011 - 30 Jun 2011 Date to be confirmed

Commemorating the end of slavery in the US, Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration of the event in the country. The date remembers the day on 19 June 1865 when Major General Gordon Granger landed at Galveston in Texas with the Union army bearing the news that the war was over and that all the slaves were to be freed. The day commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. Juneteenth celebrations and events take place throughout America and one of the biggest is at the Theodore Wirth Parkway in Minneapolis and features live music, a parade, an African American crafts fair, food and drinks events and much more.
