This old fashioned community festival and street party takes place in a district of old stone houses and broad streets among parks and open spaces. It is Glasgow's academic and campus quarter, a very pleasant area to be. Around 85,000 people attend events during the festival's two-week run, including upwards of 40,000 at the Opening Parade. Attractions during the course of the festival includes live music, film screenings, a mardi gras, garden fetes, allotment open days, cake stalls, guided tours of St Lukes Greek Orthodox Church, local history taster sessions, barbecue and family fun days and a Japanese Matsuri, where visitors put on a kimono, make origami and try their hand at the Japanese alphabet. There are copious amounts of food, drink and musical entertainment throughout.
