17 Mar 2010

First held back in 1766 by the Irish unit of the US Army and staged every year ever since, this is one of the oldest St Patrick's Day celebrations in the US. The celebrations take place in the area around 5th Avenue and 86th Street and include a huge procession of marching bands, decorated floats, dancers and pipe players. In the celebration of all things Irish, the city turns a definite shade of green with green fancy dress, green face paint, Irish flags, special green beer, green bagels and even some of the city's water fountains are turned green for the occasion. Irish or not, this is a great occasion and fun time to visit the Big Apple.
