Chicago's premier shopping street is transformed each year into a winter wonderland. The trees along its length are spangled with more than a million white lights, welcoming the start of the festive season. The stores play their part with special promotions and offers, while a programme of entertainments runs through Saturday beginning with a stage show of Walt Disney characters. Other attractions include a winter walk with carol singers, cheesecake decorating, a holiday petting zoo, children's activities and Guuggenmusig, with a selection of Swiss tunes. Mickey Mouse throws the switch on the illuminations before leading a parade through the street. Finally the evening explodes in colour and light with a fireworks spectacular over the Chicago River. On the following Sunday, the lights remain on all day.
