Dance theatres from a dozen or so countries around Europe send teams to compete with the Cypriot dance troupes at the European Dance Festival. Each of the companies presents arrangements representative of their own country's contemporary dance tradition, and each is required to throw in something special. This could come in the form of unique choreography or new explorations of movement, or an innovative stage set. The festival produces stimulating postmodern performances that are rooted in, and influenced by European dance traditions. Urban Classicism worked its magic for Britain in a recent festival with a mesmerising eclectic mix of body popping, jazz dance, hip hop, contemporary and classical dance and theatre.
