The Day of the Failed August 1991 Coup honours those that died during the coup and marks the beginning of the end of communism in the former Soviet Union. The event took place on 19 August 1991 and is also referred to as the 'August Coup', 'August Putsch' or simply the 'Day of the Failed'. Although Gorbachev returned to power within three days, it was the beginning of the end of his grip on power and ultimately led to the collapse of the Soviet Union.
