Feast of Tabernacles (Sukkot),

Israel

01 Oct 2009 - 31 Oct 2009 Date to be confirmed

The Festival of Sukkot begins on the 15th day in the Hebrew month of Tishri (September or October) on the fifth day after Yom Kippur and is a time for celebrations after the solemnity of Yom Kippur. The festival honours the 40 years Jews spent in the desert and to remember this they build a 'sukkah' representing the temporary homes that were lived in during the exodus. This is a fun event that is particularly popular among children who camp out in the sukkahs overnight. Sukkot officially lasts for seven days and no work is permitted on the first or second day of the holiday. Jewish holidays officially begin from sundown on the previous day.
