Saint Sebastian Day,

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

20 Jan 2011

Sebastian (Sao Sebastiao) is the patron saint of the city of Rio and, on his day, festivities are held to celebrate the anniversary of the city. A religious procession is central to the occasion, in which an effigy of the saint is carried from the Saint Sebastian church in Tijuca to the Metropolitan Cathedral. Here a mass is given by the Archbishop of Rio de Janeiro. Meanwhile, popular celebrations are breaking out across the city, including music and samba parties, horse racing and other sports.
