Uzgavenes,

Vilnius, Lithuania

01 Feb 2011 - 28 Feb 2011 Date to be confirmed

This traditional pre-Easter celebration takes place in the heart of Vilnius and bids farewell to a long, dark winter and welcomes the imminent arrival of spring and the warmer weather. The Easter Lent period was traditionally a sombre occasion during which singing and dancing were forbidden, so Uzgavenes sprang up as the last day of merriment before Lent. Its colourful and vibrant traditions still continue today and it is common for young Lithuanians to dress up as devils, witches and other ghoulish characters to dance and party in the streets. It is also traditional to eat pancakes before the fasting of the Lent period.
