First held back in 1954, the annual Sydney Film Festival is one of the longest running and most prestigious events of its kind in the country. Not only screening the very best in films from Australia, the festival also screens films by directors from all over the world with about 200 new films shown each year. Over a 16-day period, film fans, filmmakers, actors and other industry professionals can enjoy a programme that includes screenings, red carpet events, parties, awards ceremonies and film workshops. Fiction films, documentaries, animations and experimental works all find a place on the programme and lively debates and discussion forums form an important part of the festival.
