Celebrated throughout India but particularly in Uttar Pradesh, Shivratri, which means 'Night of Shiva', is a Hindu religious festival. Celebrations take place throughout the evening and continue late into the night with prayers, chanting, hymns and meditation sessions. Offerings of food items such as honey, rice and milk are made in Shiva's honour and many devotees fast to show their devotion to god
