The small town of Waipu was established by Scottish settlers and still today retains something of its Celtic legacy; events include Scottish Country Dancing on Monday nights and Irish Piping Evenings and Ceilidhs. All of these feature in the pick-and-mix choice of events that runs through the winter months. Other activities include Caving Adventures, Juggling Workshop, Children's Short Story Competition, Open Day at Takahiwai Marae Maori Reserve, Mid-Winter Swim, an Introduction to the Bird Life at Waipu Estuary, a Classic Golf Tournament, and a Winter Ball.
