14 Jun 2010

The City Foundation Day celebrations are held each year to mark the founding of Munich, which took place on 14 June 1158. It was founded by the German prince, Henry the Lion, who also held the titles the Duke of Saxony (1142-1180) and Duke of Bavaria (1156 -1180). To commemorate the event, every year on 14 June the city hosts a large party during which much beer and huge quantities of traditional German sausage are consumed. The serious business of the food and drink is accompanied by live music and entertainment. The event is held between Marienplatz and Odeonsplatz - the original town centre.
