The town on Trois Rivieres has earned itself a measure of notoriety through its poetry festival - a highlight of the social diary since it was first held in 1984. More than 450 events take place at 80 or more venues around the town. Often informal and generally relaxed, each one provides a unique stage for some 150 poets from over 30 countries. The audience is drawn from near and far -between 35,000 and 40,000 visitors in all - and among them are publishers and organisers of poetry festivals from other parts of the world, helping to cross-fertilise the creative energies of poets worldwide.
