Day of the Dead,

Mexico

01 Nov 2010 - 02 Nov 2010

Mexico's Day of the Dead is celebrated throughout the country and is an intriguing mix of Christian beliefs and pre-Hispanic traditions. During this uniquely Mexican celebration, devotees remember the dead with offerings at decorated alters which represent the four main elements of nature - earth, wind, water and fire. The 1 November is known as the 'Dia de los Angelitos' and is dedicated to children that have died. The 2 November is 'Dia de los Muertos' and remembers deceased adults. Despite its macabre centrepiece, the days are joyous celebrations that offer an opportunity for the living to look back fondly on those they have lost and it is believed that during these two days, spirits can return to earth to visit their families and friends. Day of the Dead is characterised by bright street festivals as well as plenty of food and drink including elaborate skulls and coffins made from sugar. It is recognised throughout the country with each region celebrating it in its own unique way.
