One of the largest gay and lesbian events in Europe is held in mid-summer in Amsterdam - one of the most open-minded cities in the world. The highlight of the Amsterdam Gay Pride weekend is a Canal Parade on Saturday afternoon. About 100 amusing and spectacular boats, decorated and with participants wearing fancy dress, navigate their way through the Prinsengracht and Amstel river watched by about 350,000 spectators. There are street parties that cater for different interest groups such as Young and Trendy, Leather and Fetish, and an official grand closing street party held on Sunday around the Stopera (town hall).
