This annual event invites filmmakers to submit films in a number of prize categories, with winners selected by an international jury of experts. The festival was first held in 1981 and focused solely on science fiction and fantasy films; today, sci-fi and fantasy remain as important themes, but the festival also includes a wider range of genres earning it a reputation as one of the best events of its kind. Over the years the festival has brought the films of such iconic directors as David Cronenberg, Pedro Almodovar, David Lynch, Ridley Scott, Luc Besson, Joel and Ethan Cohen, Peter Jackson and Quentin Tarantino to Portuguese audiences. A popular event in the region, Fantasporto attracts audiences in excess of 10,000 during its two-week run.
