01 Jun 2010 - 30 Jun 2010 Date to be confirmed

A national holiday throughout Portugal, Portugal National Day is a day of cultural celebrations and parades which take place across the country and particularly in the towns and cities. The origins of the day date back to 1580 marking the death of the Portuguese poet and adventurer Luis de Camoes. As such, Portugal National Day is also referred to as 'Camoes Day'. At the time of his death, Portugal's colonial endeavours were at their height and Camoes, who was a great traveller and never too far away from danger, was seen as a symbol of the greatness of the nation. The modern day celebrations have evolved to become more inclusive and now embrace the country's multicultural identity.
