Herrenchiemsee Festival,

Herrenchiemsee, Germany

01 Jul 2010 - 31 Jul 2010 Date to be confirmed

This is a classical music festival with a difference. Visitors board a steamship in Prien on the shore of Lake Chiemsee and, once on the island of Herrenchiemsee, they approach the castle of Ludwig II on foot or by horse-drawn carriage. A regal treat awaits: a unique musical experience in an opulent royal court. Each year the festival adopts a different motto, at the same time exploring the polarisation, epitomised by Ludwig II, between the utopian and the real patron of the arts. Recent examples are 'Music in Harmony and in Conflict with its Epoch' and 'Artificial Paradises – Dreamscapes of Music'. Besides being novel in theme, the concerts are of the highest quality. Herrenchiemsee Palace was built from 1878 as an idealised copy of Versailles.

Times
Concerts begin 1900.
