A-Ma Festival,

Macau, China

01 Apr 2010 - 31 May 2010 Date to be confirmed

Held on the 23rd day of the Third Moon, the annual A-Ma Festival honours the Goddess of Seafarers. According to legend, the deity calmed the raging waters and provided a safe passage for a boat caught out at sea in a ferocious storm. Grateful for their safe return to dry land, the sailors built the A-Ma Shrine at the spot where they first returned to land. A particularly popular celebration amongst coastal communities, the festival is a time to pay respects and ask for safety whilst at sea.
