Founded in 1434, Dresden's Striezelmarkt is thought to be the oldest Christmas market in Germany and has certainly grown to become one of its biggest. Striezelmarkt is a treasure trove of traditional handicrafts with carved wooden items from the Erzgebirge Mountains, pottery from Lusatia, Pulsnitz Pfefferkuchen (gingerbread), intricate handmade lace and hand-blown glass Christmas tree decorations. Food, drink and seasonal entertainment are all on offer as part of the Striezelmarkt experience. But what really sets this apart from other Christmas markets in Germany is the Christmas Candle Pyramid that creates a wonderful centrepiece to the market square.
