La Virgen Blanca,

Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain

04 Aug 2010 - 09 Aug 2010

These six days of fiesta have developed over many years in Vitoria, incorporating many traditions and religious observances within a range of fun festivities. The fiesta as a whole is known as the White Virgin (Virgen Blanca), and many of the events take place on the square of the same name. On the first day, the crowds gather here to wait for the clock to strike six in the evening, to announce the commencement of merriment. The opening event is the 'Descent of Celedon', a character in fancy dress flying across the square on a zip-wire. Religious ceremonies, music, children's activities, bull fighting, theatre and sports are all on the agenda over the following days. The 'Blusas' are groups of friends or associates who help motivate the pace of events over the course of the fiesta. Every night there is a firework display on the hill above the town.
